It’s Wednesday, and this week I’ve had 3 sleepless nights already. During the day I feel all ‘strange’ and unfocused. My mind is so scattered, it’s difficult to be productive at all, which gets me all stressed out, and so a vicious cycle begins:

Scattered-Procrastinate-try something-get distracted-try something else-anxious feelings-procrastinate-beat myself up (anxious feelings)-try something else-get distracted-beat myself up,(anxious feelings are increasing now) etc.

This happens a lot when we are not centred and grounded. It’s worse when we keep piling things on our plate (or when they just ‘magically appear there’).

It can even lead to full blown anxiety attacks.

And yes! The moon’s energy/astrological influences can definitely play a role in the internal state of our bodies.

If this resonates even a little with you, here are 5 things I personally do to get myself re-centred so I can navigate my days more peacefully, especially when the energy around me is so wonky.

And remember, don’t beat yourself up if you are having a difficult time with staying focused. We’re all just doing our best!

5 Ways I Re-Centre and Ground Myself

  1. Slow Down. Period. Slow your breathing, slow your steps, consciously slow down your thoughts by saying to yourself, ‘Slow down. Breath.’ Slow down your nervous system by taking some slow deep breaths. Just focus on the air entering and exiting your nostrils. I sometimes use a mantra, like “All Is Well”.

  2. Do a Slow, Mindful Practice. Yoga, stretching, just a repetitive movement, like rubbing your hands up and down your thighs while deep breathing can help. Sometimes I lie on my back and put my hands on my belly. Feeling my whole body touch the ground/earth helps me to get grounded. As an artistic approach, doing pointilism, or zen-doodling-any kind of focused, repetitive movement with hand to paper helps.

  3. Do a Visualization. There are lots of guided visualizations on line to help you get grounded, like this one , or on your own you can picture roots growing from your feet deep down into the core of the earth; grounding into the earth’s energy; pulling you down, keeping you feeling solid on the ground. Imagine the colour red.

  4. Eat and Drink Grounding Foods. First of all, drink lots of water, as it clears you, rather than clogging your system up with added caffeine and chemicals. I tend to be drawn to earthy/warm spiced teas, like Chai, when I need to ground, but if there is too much caffeine, best to lean towards calming, soothing herbal teas, such as chamomile. When it comes to food, hearty, earthy food is best-anything with root vegetables: potatoes, carrots, beets, etc. You are what you eat!

  5. Use Scent. Use grounding essential oils, usually tree based, such as White Fir, Pine, Arborvitae, Cedarwood, etc. You can also smudge yourself with sage or other bundles made for smudging (you may want to look up health and safety guidelines first, and also honour First Nations traditions around this).

**Bonus! Most Importantly, GET OUTSIDE! It’s a great way to combine all of the above. Get your feet/hands/body on the ground if possible, go for a leisurely walk or just sit and take in the sights, scents, and sounds. Breathe deeply while you are out there. Get present. Notice things. Nature is a healer, and a breath of fresh air does everybody good!!

**Oh, and another Bonus! Try prioritizing and taking things off your plate. Choose the most important tasks first (closest deadline, perhaps?), and break things into small little baby steps, which feel more manageable to do. This will help to calm your mind. I often repeat to myself “Calm; Focused. Calm; Focused. Breathe.” It helps!

Self-Care is crucial when it comes to managing your anxiety levels. The more you can put this into practice on a regular basis, the easier it will be to get back to centre when you start to ‘unravel’.
