What are expressive arts and why use them?

Expressive Arts, simply put, is engaging in any form of creative expression (music, visual art, written word, movement, acting, etc.) in order to gain a better understanding of yourself, and possibly heal some wounds. The use of Expressive Arts is ‘PROCESS DRIVEN’ rather than ‘PRODUCT DRIVEN’.

This means the main purpose or focus is to explore your inner workings, as opposed to ‘creating a pretty image or sound’.

Exploring and expressing what is going on inside of you (Mind, Body, and Soul),   shines a light on thoughts or feelings that have remained hidden away in your subconscious/unconscious mind for too long, and kept you repeating patterns that have gotten you results you don’t like in your life (such as low self-esteem, unhealthy relationships, stress and inner turmoil, to name a few).

The use of creative expression can be seen as a doorway to higher self-awareness. And it is only once you are aware of things that you can begin to change them.

Where does nature connection come in?

First of all, let’s not forget that we ARE nature. We’re as much a part of it as the trees, birds, and animals. Therefore, just being in nature is (naturally) healing. It brings us back to ourselves, and reminds us who we really are-Souls, having a human experience. Our ancestors and the Natives of our land had a much better understanding of the importance of our connection with the Earth. Somewhere along the way, we lost this connection, and in doing so, we lost pieces of ourselves. The purpose of incorporating nature connection is to help you retrieve those pieces which you have lost, so you can begin to feel whole again.
